Can't stop thinking about Le Guin on children's literature, it resonates a lot with discussions I've had with my 10yo about why he prefers non-fiction books. He says fiction "wants to teach [him] a sneaky lesson all the time", and with non-fic you don't get the runaround.

Whole text doesn't fit in alt text but intro says:
"I made a note to myself a while ago: 'Whenever they tell me children what this sort of book and children need this sort of writing, I'm going to smile and politely shut my earlids. I am a writer, not a caterer. What children most want and need is what we and they don't know they want and don't think they need, and only writers can offer it to them"
Highlighted sections afterwards:
"Most fiction for kids and young adults is reviewed as if it existed in order to deliver a useful little sermon โ€”"Grow-ing up is tough but you can make it." "Popularity is not all it's cracked up to be." "Drugs are dangerous.""
"the movement of the story as read, in an inexpressible sense of discovery, rather than a tidy bit of advice?"
"The notion that a story "has a message" assumes that it can be reduced to a few abstract words, neatly summarised in a school or college examination paper or a brisk critical review."

"Omg you've started getting some stubble? That's so exciting! Are you excited to grow a beard?" Not in the slightest

Growing the tiny bit of facial hair that I can is definitely ~gender euphoric~ but it's also a sensory nightmare and as soon as I can feel it when I touch my face I need it gone immediately

So are national broadcasts gonna bring up Trea Turner every single time a player gets a standing ovation now?

i'm sorry but people posting about getting "queerbaited" by taylor swift is like a dog posting angrily about their owner doing the ball behind the back trick
