As today is Indigenous Peoples' Day, here's a list of meanings of the word for a horse in five indigenous languages: 5. Burden bearer (Cherokee) 4. It is ridden (Mohawk) 3. Tame elk (Cheyenne) 2. Big deer (Creek) 1. Mystery dog (Lakota)
I was told by my Lakota pal that the word in his language meant "big dog"
Brilliant. Could you put the originals?
Speaking of horses/dogs/indigenous languages, a Navajo word for a pet, łį́į́ʼ, originally described a dog. But when horses were reintroduced to North America (and became the favoured “pet” in Navajo culture) the word łį́į́ʼ shifted to refer to a horse. Dogs were then called łééchąąʼí, meaning “shit pet”
Mohawk still cracks me up "What's that thing you rode in on?" "...well I rode it, didn't I?"
RespecK ❤️🤲🏾🤲🏾❤️
The story of Sequoyah and his single-handed development of the Cherokee syllabary is fascinating.
I love them all but Mystery Dog is my fave. That’s hilarious. I’m imagining them seeing a horse for the first time and being so confused 😂.
Onongada: Gohsa-des (with accents my keyboard doesn't handle)
I like mystery dog 🐕
Many of these could work for maned wolves. I do like the Ojibwe for horse. Lakota is fun.
