The existence of active shooter drills makes me viscerally upset in a way I can't even fully explain.

School shootings are, at the end of the day, still extremely rare. Dying in a school shooting is reportedly less likely than being struck by lightning. And an entire public liturgy has sprung up around it, which millions and millions of children are forced to celebrate, over and over.
