“The world you grew up in no longer exists” that is correct because I am a fucking adult

Is this a conflation of time passing with norms changing? Because I don't know what becoming an adult has to do with not being able to raise a family on one blue-collar salary today.

Part of growing up is realizing that it never existed. The world has always been like this your parents sheltered you from it.

Never really existed then either-just a fixed point in our perception.

When i was growin' up internet was rare stuff, we played on the streets, football grounds. We had dreams and thinking, to keep us moving, ideas, friendship. Slowly went to the waste

I feel like people are taking Adam’s post awfully literally. I read it as him saying the world you grew up in SHOULDN’T exist anymore, because once you’re grown, you shouldn’t see the world the way you did as a child. For better and worse. No?

In the world I grew up in phones attached to the wall with a wire. Don’t tell me there’s no progress.

Luckily there’s a whole set of conservative social institutions devoted to maintaining the belief that the most noble, manly, American thing is to stand athwart the 20th century yelling “Stop!”

But I want to go back to when everyone’s parents smoked indoors and it was dangerous to walk around Manhattan at night!
