Because a book ban is not about the book. It's part and parcel with banning social transition. Parents rights is a backdoor into bigotry. It's a way to convince centrists to side with fascists without them even realizing it.
BTW when librarians push back against well-meaning people who say parents have the right to determine what their child reads but not anyone else's, this is what we mean. Parents rights almost always means denying a child's rights. A book ban is a book ban, even if 1 child is a target.
