My instructors taught that, but thankfully in the context of both establishing depth and using depth as visual contrast. Same with using black!
I think we got cautioned about using black too - because I always wanted to & they didn’t really like it. Probably for similar reasons as line? I’ve not been to art classes in 25 years though so I’m really having to stretch back to recall & I’m possibly misremembering things.
