Anyone know what “being proud of British history” actually MEANS?
I know all about British history 'cos I read "1066 And All That" which must be accurate 'cos it's a book, innit?
Not me. It's a concept which has always baffled me. How can I be proud - or ashamed - of something over which I had no influence. Being proud of my British heritage is as meaningless as it would to be proud of my hair colour or my height.
Vacuous nationalism? Just-so stories of kings and battles as a comfort blanket? Taking credit for the nice bits and pretending the rest didn't happen? Visiting grand country houses and never, EVER asking where the money came from?
