Happy to be visiting sites in Galicia, N. Spain, with PhD student Ruby George and the CIIMAR team. This is the southern (warmest) region in our collaborative study on the resilience of intertidal forests along a latitudinal gradient. @aec13.bsky.social@dansmale1.bsky.social@mdolbeth.bsky.social

Here, Swansea University PhD student Ruby George re-measures tagged seaweed individuals to assess growth. It’s after dark, but the scene is illuminated by torchlight.

Such a privilege to take part in the #ICES groups working on non-native species and shipping vectors 🚢 🦀 🦪 🛳 Firm believer that camaraderie and meeting in great locations (🙏🏼 @unisevilla biology faculty 🇪🇸) are conducive to great scientific discussions

It would be totally wild if the very first experimental deep-sea mining project came within a half marathon of dredging up the world's largest cold water coral reef. A reef we wouldn't even know existed for 4 more decades. Anyway, that's exactly what happened.

In a region once thought to be so ecologically uninteresting that it was viewed as a useful testbed for deep-sea mining equipment, NOAA researchers have detected what could be the world’s lar…

The discovery of 32-million-year-old #kelp holdfasts from the Olympic Peninsula in Washington, means that this group of marine foundation species is twice as ancient as previously thought & highlights the vastly different communities that kelps have supported over time. phys.org/news/2024-01...

This timeline depicts the evolution of kelp forests and associated organisms along the Pacific Coast over the past 32 million years, along with water temperature variations. Black bars indicate members of modern, complex kelp ecosystems - sea otters, abalone, sea urchins, and, until recently, sea cows. The green bars indicate now-extinct members of early kelp beds, including demostylians and penguin-like plotopterids. Credit: Steffen Kiel and Cindy Looy
