The distance from Luke’s Small Goods to our front door by bike is about 3/4 of a rye chocolate chip cookie.

Top-down view of a small child in a cargo bike. They are wearing a turquoise helmet with corgi and shell stickers on, a great sweatshirt with dogs and bikes on, and navy pants. They are holding the remnants of a cookie in their chubby wee fists.

Hear, hear! The Windsor St “bike lane” is one of our oldest and worst, but oh, the weeping and gnashing of teeth when that stripe of paint went in! Someone was even putting tacks in the lane.

Yes! The Halifax Urban Greenway was supposed to go from more-or-less my front door to my workplace. I’m holding out hope it might be completed before I retire (they’ve still got 25ish years).

Bike lanes are assumed to be empty. After all, “Nobody uses them.”

In the last three days I’ve twice had to slam on my brakes HARD in the Windsor St unprotected bike lane because a driver wants to go around a left-turning vehicle and doesn’t check to see if the bike lane is empty first. I don’t even think the drivers realized afterwards that we were there.

Oh! And curb cutouts to get to the bike parking (ideally very close to the bike parking itself so I’m not crowding pedestrians to try to get to it — looking at you, Mumford and Windsor Sobeys-es.)

It’s infrastructure or adjacent, but speedily responding to damaged infrastructure (like the tipped sign & cones on South Park this week, or instances of crushed bollards or shifted barriers, makes a big difference.

Bike parking is a biggie. Trying to find *anywhere* you can tether a bike in Bayer’s Lake is wild. (Bayer’s Lake is, of course, generally hostile to human life, but since a MUP goes there I thought there might be something…)

YES! My 5yo passenger knows each curb cut well and has specific ones she wants me to go over extra slowly because they’re so jarring (even at almost-falling-over speeds).
