This is one of the reasons I wanted to make 2000s inspired vaporwave. The idea that something as ugly as post 9/11 america being presented as a glossy futuristic utopia, is a perfect example on how warped and uncanny the commodification of our own nostalgia has become.

Definitely, but I'd still say that the Outsider term is used in that context more often than not. I just feel the term causes more division and exclusion when it comes to discussing creative work. Like saying someone isn't a "real musician" because they weren't classicly trained.
