Yes, totally agree, they have to change attention from slides to the object and makes them more aware I think! (or more awake for some 😄)

And it gives us a break from talking, and the drama and jeopardy of whether a demonstration will work is always exciting. I think students appreciate that we've tried to bring the subject to life. I certainly did as a student.
