And reminds us that there is a history of supporting community-led journals through volunteer labour and both financial and in-kind support (from societies, universities, museums). I found it remarkable how good some of the 1950s/60s editors were at persuading institutions to support their journal.

I honestly can't decide if it's a lesson in the value of organising the different parts of the publishing process for yourself (=not a unified service provider), or a reflection on how challenging it was (cf 1970s) for any editor with a full-time academic job to find the time/energy to do it

I too have decided I don't really need to stock up on personal copies of over-priced academic monographs, but if the publisher has a trade arm that includes things you (or someone in your household) would like to read, there are other ways of thinking about how to spend the book voucher...
