Chapter 6: Why AI can’t fix social media, is probably the lengthiest part in the book (I just began reading) and I would suggest journalists and researchers interested in documenting objectionable speech and moderation should read it diligently. 1/2

Back in the day, Twitter had a bug-bounty program for detecting algorithmic bias. Researchers had found that Twitter’s image-cropping algorithm centered Latin script instead of Arabic script at least 90 percent of the time. Today, X, can’t even acknowledge basic issues.

I have followed the authors for a very long time so I have high confidence in their work. And the book is written in a way to appeal to from all walks of life. I would say it’s a must buy.

Received my copy of AI Snake Oil today. Oddly, Amazon delivered it a week early and that too via India speed post and not the usual mechanism. Probably cause it was a pre-order. But that has never happened before. Anyway, I’m sorted for the weekend.

There was a pretty bad exodus today on Threads. Meta’s automated moderation suspended a bunch of NBA users ahead of the season so they moved to Bluesky.
