Oh yeah, maybe. A lot of anime from that era also came out of Japan, Akira and the like. But even those ideas must have come from somewhere!

I think Neuromancer set it up, and Akira solidified it. Growing up in the 80s Japan was really in the zeitgeist as where the tech happens
