This seems to sum up my writing week. Remember, though, progress is not ONLY measured in words! Keep putting one foot in front of the other, and you'll get there... Or, at least that's what I'm telling myself for now 😃 #academicwriting#academicsky

Did my first scientific experiment as part of my degree in Freshwater and Marine Biology; viewing an onion cell through a microscope.

A close up of an onion cell viewed through a microscope at a magnification of 10X. It appears purple due to being dyed with methylene blue.

Let's talk about one of the most interesting questions in cancer biology: Why don't WHALES get MORE CANCER? This question is also called "Peto's Paradox" for epidemiologist Sir Richard Peto, who demonstrated the link between smoking and lung cancer, 1951. So why whales, in particular?

A photo of a humpback whale, eye to the camera, just under the surface of blue water, with sunbeams streaming down. It has ridged skin that is cream colored with darker grey dorsal skin.

Taken from Marine Mammal Center website, where it is uncredited.

When Edith Widder & her team were trying to capture video of giant 🦑, they lured them in w/a flashing blue light called an “e-jelly”. A squid glides into frame to investigate the light w/their arms. It’s so dark that the 🦑’s body dissolves into the inky blackness. #Squidtember

A drawing on paper, all black and white, of a giant squid in the dark deep sea. Its tentacle clubs are in the foreground going to grab you while the rest of the squid gets increasingly darker fading into the background

After a storm, on the rocky beach of Batumi, you can find a lot of interesting things - driftwood, walnuts, remnants of algae and broken shells - all mixed with colourful minerals from the local mountains. #art
