I've got to say, though: for all that he did amazing things with the material and the cast, it will never not be weird to me that Robert Altman hired Robin Williams to play one of the few cartoon characters known for extensive ad-libbing and then expected him to stick to the script.

And I know, in Altman's thinking he was adapting the comic strip where the character definitionally only said the lines as written. This is not a criticism of him. Just something that's funny in retrospect.
