Been enjoying getting to combine my art and osteology skills at work recently with some temporary installations! [Note: All bones on display are replicas.]

A black chalkboard like surface on a wooden worktop, with two (replica) skulls at the back of the display. There is an illustrated skull, with different coloured sections and text that reads: THE HUMAN SKULL IS MADE UP OF 22 BONES* (28 IF YOU COUNT THE INNER EARS)

21 of these bones fuse together to form the cranium. (8 make a case to protect your brain and 13 up your face.) One your jaw - or mandible - remains only make bone unfused and is connected by soft tissue, so your mouth can open and close!

The inner ear bones inside your skull and are are the smallest bones in the human body!

*TEETH ARE KIND OF A SEPARATE SPECIAL THING

There are three drawings of bones labelled: incus, malleus, and stapes which has an arrow pointing to a small dot labelled actual size.
Half of a black chalkboard like surface on a wooden worktop. There are (replica) skulls and bones with labels on.

In handwritten text it says: WHILE YOU'RE ALIVE SO ARE YOUR BONES! They are constantly re-making themselves in order to stay healthy.

If a bone is damaged, either by disease, injury, or even on purpose during a surgery, the cells in your bones will try to repair the damage. This is how we can tell whether someone lived with a disease or survived after an injury or an operation!

There are then little sketches of cartoon bones at various stages of healing.

WEEK 1
Hematoma (Swelling of mostly blood)

WEEKS 2-3
Temporary Soft callus (fibrocartilage)

1-4 MONTHS
Replacement with hard bony callus

4-12 MONTHS*
Further bone remodelling
*CAN LAST UP TO 3-5 YEARS!
