There is a smug form of climate posting happening now where people make comments like "how could you not know this was coming" or "how did you not prepare for this" and I just want to say... The thing about climate change is that it's so easy to victim blame, but we need to stop it.

a post with a link to a Washington Post article.

The person's post text is: "Unaccustomed to such storms, caught by surprise."

WaPo's article:
"Why Helene's floods caught North Carolina off guard
Before this scenic, rustic Great Smoky Mountain refuge turned into a trap few residents saw coming, there were signs of Hurricane ..."

It's not the victim's fault. It's hardly ever within the victim's capacity to do anything to prevent the kinds of damages they're dealing with. What were they supposed to do? Go where? The reach of this storm was enormous. People weren't allowed to skip work. Did everyone even have a working car?

I hate that crap. The point of it is that it's changing the entire climate and it's happening due to systemic factors beyond any individual control. These same people (quite rightly!) post dismissals of "carbon footprints" but this is the same thing from the other direction.

It’s also so easy to watch the suffering from the comfort of your own couch. I don’t know how I would or could cope with this level of loss and destruction.

Also--what place on the planet is free from climate change (?!) Deciding where to live these days is a pick your poison type calculation, the weather's gonna fuck with you one way or another no matter where you live.
