It bothers me that we need to communicate this selfish angle - that you yourself, or your slightly fuzzier than average girl, or slightly smaller and slimmer than average boy, or your quirky child, or whatever - are also protected when we protect the most vulnerable. This shouldn't be necessary.

We should care about protecting the vulnerable, regardless of whether or not it also helps us. Because protecting the vulnerable does not hurt us! (unless we're bullies - and if that's the case, smarten the fuck up already) BUT a rising tide raises all boats, and your family will also be protected
