For me it's undoubtedly seeing Paul Cadmus' "Night in Bologna" in the national portrait gallery in 2013. I'd never seen a painting with so much drama, interiority, place and time altogether. It's more than a snapshot, it seems to contain itself and its past and the question of its future.
