I have never written a poem, but I felt the need to put my hurt into words

A thousand paper cuts Allison Chapman It’s not the final blow that caused the death
It’s a death by a thousand paper cuts The way we are killed, one by one It’s a relentless attack, the sharp words, the false rhetoric It’s the incendiary words, calling us slurs They encourage each other to escalate further To make the threat, to throw the punch, to pull the trigger It consumes their lives and swallows them whole In the name of children they destroy our existence Burn our books, steal our pride, beg us to commit suicide As they kick us harder into the mud and murder our youth within our schools I have to ask why are we the ones who are a threat? What have we done to deserve this life A life of hoping for another day So we might cry for help and beg and plea To stop the death of a thousand paper cuts
