I think twitter does feed it too. It's social media in general, the constant surveillance. Like how before you could go "these people won't remember you" if you leave the house wearing a bad fit, but now with phones and social media there's the real anxiety of thousands of people making fun of you because some asshole decided to take a pic to shame you. So many candid moments of people get captured and go viral like this and I think it just encourages this anxiety and need for approval to not be made fun of. Because fandom is the same way. Shippers can get mocked for no reason, an artist's work can get picked by the mob and made fun of, and if people want to find a way to say that the person is problematic and deserves it, they'll do so. So the only way to be free from "not being a dumb fetishizing fujo", for example, is canon validation. Proof your time isn't "wasted" and that the mob is wrong. This is why shippers who got harassed by antis will want canon validation too. Just
something to get the bandwagon to move on, or to prove the bullies wrong, because fandom on modern social media is just like this now. Of course the obsession with creator approval always existed, but I do think the constant sharing of spaces, always being watched and having anxiety proven right by seeing people get jumped by hundreds of people for harmless fandom fun, exacerbates it on a different level. Especially when a lot of young adults in fandom now don't know anything but fandom spaces being like this.
