If you’ve ever canvassed for a political candidate, you know it can mean long hours on your feet. But what if the temperature outside is 112F? My colleague Zahra reports on how extreme heat is changing campaigning in AZ and NV (think ice vests & neck fans!) www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...

Campaigns in Arizona and Nevada have been getting out the vote despite temperatures of 110F, with some canvassers wearing ice vests and neck fans to cool down.

The PJ Harvey show tonight was excellent. Not an artist I have followed in recent years (we bought tix on an impulse) but she blew me away

You’ve probably heard of the urban heat island effect—it turns out there’s a “wet island” effect too, with cities getting more rain than nearby rural areas. One factor among many in urban flood risk. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

There is a period after an hour or so of grilling on a hundred degree day, after I've eaten, but about an hour before I do the dishes, when I go into the AC cooled room. I call this period Father's Interregnum, and it exceeds the quality of life enjoyed by some medieval monarchs

It costs 3 cents to make a penny, and we already have too many of them, yet the savings from suspending penny production would be a tiny fraction of 1% of the federal budget—so it’s not seen as critical. The result: a perpetual penny glut. Great story www.nytimes.com/2024/09/01/m...

Few things symbolize our national dysfunction as much as this accursed coin, which we mint by the millions because it’s too worthless to spend.

Only Jackson Lamb could defend loud public flatulence as how he works through his grief (so glad Slow Horses is back)
