I'm looking after my nan while my mum is on holiday. Nan has dementia and terminal bowel cancer. By all accounts, she should not still be here, and in many ways, she sort of isn't. But in between, there are moments like this, where my childhood home is a little warm beacon in the night, unchanged.

The back of a terraced house at night. There is a lean-to on the back covering a patio, it is roofed with a mature grapevine, with fairy lights entwined in it. Sitting just at the end of a patio is a small fluffy black and white dog. The house is brightly lit, and a woman is washing up at the kitchen window. Long shadows are cast by flowerpots at the end of the patio, and outside of the lean-to is darkness. The warm glow of the house is gentle and inviting.

My grandad died in 2019. In the fleeting moment in which the multitude of times I have brought the dog home blur into the composite image of 'home', I can almost imagine he will be in the armchair watching the news while nan potters.
