Fascism has come to America. What else can you say? These images are just from today. He calls his enemies "vermin," wants to revoke media broadcast licenses, and foments hate against members of ethnic minority groups, whom he promises to deport by the millions in order to fix country's problems.

On Oct. 7, 2006, Novaya Gazeta journalist Anna Politkovskaya was shot dead in her apartment building in Moscow. 18 years ago today. The newspaper and the independent reporting it represented are gone in Russia now, too. Also today, Putin turns 72.
