If you need a justification: Running up the popular vote total is a good thing even it won't make a difference in THIS election. A huge popular vote win (or, possibly, loss, eek) and narrow EC could (Lord willing) lead to the end of the EC.

Also, with the EC/popular vote gap shrinking, there is a scenario, albeit unlikely, where he loses the EC and wins the popular vote. It will be a lot easier for him to steal the election if he wins the popular vote than if he loses it.
