Way too many "mocktails" are sweet, because alcohol is a shortcut to complex, big flavors and rather than try to replicate that bartenders will default to the easiest big flavor: sugar. There are subtle, complicated mocktails -- and more and more of them -- but you have to look for them.

I like Proxies's "wine-alternatives," which aren't dealcoholized wine but vinegar/juice/tea/spice mixes that suggest the same complexity of wine. (Their reds are especially good.) Seedlip is another. I also like Lyre's "malt" (faux bourbon), which is smoky but 0 ABV. Some good craft NA beers, too.

It you don’t mind the inquiry - does the alcohol in bitters make them off limits for most people abstaining from alcohol?
