the resulting chassis was quite small, with only four roadwheels and the gun extending through the vehicle to the rear where the autoloader and ammo was stored outside of the crew compartment, the resulting 30 ton design offered the same armor as heavy tanks but was better protected overall. 11/11

Berge felt that stabilizers at the time did not offer the performance needed for real fire on the move, while a first shot may be made, tanks often stopped for follow up shots, he felt that the advantage offered was limited and that better protection when stopped would be better. 10/?

Berge would go on to connect these concepts and propose them as part of the S tank design, the suspension would be connected to a stabilizer from Bofors that would keep the entire tank stabilized as opposed to just the gun. 9/?

Berge had also examined some German vehicles post war and noted shorter vehicles had the ability to maneuver quickly, Berge combined these concepts as part of the S tank proposal. 8/?

in 1943 Berge had also read about the 1940 Char B1 design from the french, which for the era atleast featured a large hull mounted cannon that was on a fixed azimuth and required the entire vehicle to turn to fire it, this was done by a complex transmission system under the gunners control. 7/?

this data showed that a full half of all tank "kills" were due to hits on the turret and turret ring, lower shots on the hull were much more rare, these stats also showed the chances of being hit were largely due to the tanks height. 6/?

in 1956 however Sven Berge of the Swedish Arms Administration proposed Alternative-S, a much different solution to the problems faced by the Swedish ground forces, as part of the centurion purchase the UK had provided volumns of data from World War II and Korean War tank engagements. 5/?

Alternative-A was tasked with purchasing a design from either the UK or USA of roughly 50 tons but mounting a heavier gun than the British QF-20 Pounder of their existing Centurion fleet while Alternative-T was to procure a lighter design of 30 tons with less protection but more mobility. 4/?

in the mid 1950's the Royal Swedish Army Material Administration put out a contract to find a replacement and from this two working groups were filled. Alternative-A ( Anglo-American ) and Alternative-T (Tysk-Fransk ) both the UK/USA and Germany/France respectively, both with different goals. 3/?
