Cottbus is affected by the phasing out of surface coal mining and always had a relatively big right-wing vote (anyone remembering the DVU?). Similar in Frankfurt... I think the fact that both have universities might have worked in the SPD's favour here.
The shift to the right in #German#conservatives. Bigger point: the rise of right-wing populism is a product of the crisis of centre-right conservatism.
Another point I would add is the peculiarity of the "Speckgürtel" around Berlin - effectively extended suburban communities. I would guess that the AFD didn't score there in the same way as in more remote areas like the Uckermark and the Prignitz.
Good observations, as usual. I would add the urban-rural split to the mix. Brandenburg is probably one of the most rural Länder in Germany. I would guess that in the few bigger cities like Potsdam, Frankfurt, Cottbus, and Brandenburg the picture looks more favourably for the SPD and even the Greens.

Judging from the available data, most unis still run a surplus. The situation at OBU looks bad, though. Overall, however, the culling of humanities programmes seems to be more driven by ideology than economic factors: www.hesa.ac.uk/data-and-ana...
Is there some hard evidence on the financial situation of British universities? So far, a lot seems to be anecdotal. If a university is in real financial dire straits, surely they would close expensive-to-teach subjects first? Humanities are, on the whole, cheap-to-teach "cash cows" for most unis.
That's the kind of Cold War stuff @malcolmcraig.bsky.social could know.
