Shugborough Park, Staffs, on a beautiful day: view from Hadrian’s Arch, with oak no. 1242 in middle ground, right. Set into the arch are busts of Admiral George Anson (left) and, his wife, Lady Elizabeth. This is the Anson of circumnavigation and ‘father of the Royal Navy’ fame. #MaritimeHistory

View across grassy parkland on a clear, sunny, blue-skyed, autumnal day. In the middle ground, right, a veteran oak tree (no 1242) is beginning to turn to autumn colours.
View of Hadrian’s Arch, Shugborough: erected in the 1760s and modelled on the original in Athens; set against a blue sky.
Close-up of Admiral George Anson’s bust, set within the upper part of Hadrian’s Arch. Anson was born at Shugborough and was buried in the parish church at nearby Colwich. When he died in 1762, the arch, then under construction, was remodelled as a memorial to him, his career, and his wife Elizabeth.
View of Hadrian’Arch, looking up the hill with oak 1242 in the foreground, left.
