For those who don't know Cocaine & Rhinestones, it's a podcast about country music, but in the same way as Apollo 11 was quite a long journey. It may be the greatest work of narrative non-fiction in any medium I've ever encountered.
I recommend to friends who may not be country music fans but otherwise curious and intelligent people to start with his first season episode about The Pill by Loretta Lynn. If that doesn't capture them, they can move on.
I faded on the second season though; lost my patience with the hour-plus digressions on knights and bullfighting, etc., which are interesting to a point, just not to the extent that he took them. And when it comes to longform narrative nonfiction I think yours is better. So there.
I describe 500 Songs to the unfamiliar as Cocaine and Rhinestones but about rock music.
