And halfway through the song, Brian stopped it and said "Billy, what's that part you're playing?" Billy Hinsche played him the synth line he was playing. "Paul, could you double that on the sax?" Paul Mertens doubles it. "Can we try playing that as the intro?"

And that was how they played the song that night, with the new intro I'd seen Brian rearrange on the spot during the soundcheck. I'd been witness to a little, tiny, moment of spontaneous musical creation by Brian Wilson. How could I *not* pick that song after that?
