Came across a photo of this piece by @chaseprairie.bsky.social, photograph Liz's work in 2018 (?! is that possible, Liz?). Wonderful work, by a great artist, about one of my favorite naturlist-scientists: the late, great Virginia Kline, ecologist at the UW Madison Arb till 1996ish. Thanks Liz!

Bosworth and Toller report that swegle means "bright as the sun, splendid, brilliant." Is their definition not applicable or no longer accepted?

A fascinating study from 2011 of hybridization in the California valley oak and blue oak (Q. lobata and Q. douglasii). Take-homes: * Hybrid adults serve as conduits for intersp gene flow * High pollen contribution from outside the reserve * Hybrid acorn % < hyb adult % (?!) doi.org/10.1086/659646

Another good night of migration setting up in the east tonight! #birds#fall#migration

BirdCast map showing 406.6 million birds in flight at 9:20pm EDT. Migration is concentrated in the eastern part of the states and headed south. The sunset line is still visible from west of Texas up to North Dakota.
NEXRAD radar map with birds and weather on the radar.
