Where I think this gets tricky—& what I’ve seen in my students, at least—is the sense of distrust in big media sources that leads people to believe they’ll only see the true gravity of a situation by watching raw footage of horrible things. We need better legacy media coverage that people can trust.

People are rightfully pointing out that victims share this footage with the hopes of people bearing witness. That’s true. That doesn’t mean you, personally, have to watch graphic videos nonstop if you’re not personally in more of a position to take action on them after the first few images you see.

Yeah I don't watch stuff like that. My advice is to assume all media has some bias and instead read broadly. Pick serious magazines from left and right to read. For your opinions from the intersection of those. But definitely journalism needs more freedom.
