I really think people have to get over the idea that the reason Trump has been so successful lies in his ability to explain his policy proposals in appealing language. He is the zenith example of, “We hate the eggheads.”

So much this. I recall so many answers to objections when I was a grad student as starting, “I think we can all agree…,” which was just a way of assuming one’s intuitions without an argument. This debate is full of that.
Of course smartphones changed something. So did the Internet. Transformative technologies change stuff. They make new facts. Attempting to pretend they will go away helps nobody.

One of the more interesting things I learned from the Canada online News Act discussions and aftermath was that there’s a significant number of journalists who feel entitled to a publication mechanism in which their views are privileged, and if they don’t get it they have a tantrum.
