Yes, they did. The New York Times thought he was exaggerating too when they reported on Hitler after he was released from jail over the Beer Hall Putsch. That's also the Times which gave Hitler op-ed space to talk about his new book. The same Times who said his rhetoric was simply to get votes.

Surely the NYT has learned its lesson.
