A composite image of Mercury's position in the sky over a sunset in Spain. The image was created by taking several photos of Mercury at different times during March 2000 and superimposing them on a single photogenic sunset. Each photo was taken when the Sun was 10 degrees below the horizon. Mercury can be seen as a line of white dots in the sky, moving in an arc.

Have you ever seen the planet Mercury? Because Mercury orbits so close to the Sun, it never wanders far from the Sun in Earth's sky. If trailing the Sun, Mercury will be visible low on the horizon for only a short while after sunset. If leading the Sun, Mercury will be visible only shortly before
