It has a fascinating mosaic of both derived and basal characteristics and, unlike in previous studies, was recovered as the basalmost Baru species. Which means its part of a ghost lineage spanning the entire Miocene.

The paper also mentions a new Alcoota dwarf form, seemingly a relative of "Baru" huberi and the Bullock Creek taxon. Not only does this add to an already barely studied branch, it also means each Baru had a tinly little neighbour croc it hung out with.
