This is the saddest, most loser advice I’ve ever seen. It’s important to cultivate a wide network of colleagues! I’m finding that especially true in mid career as I’m teaching and doing some curation, many of the artists I lecture on or include in programs are ones works in similar areas to my own.
That take is WILD! I think following artists who have work similar to mine that I adore as well as who have styles I don’t do (and also adore) has helped me grow. Get out of that “comparison” mindset and found good friends. Plus the amount I learn from my fellows - worth so much!!
The best thing I did in my art career was network with other artists in my field. Helping one another is the shit
Comparison, or inspiration. You know. Either one of those.
Musician here to say that musicians are notorious for this attitude.
This advice scans as a method of isolating a vulnerable person from their support network, like, not learning to collaborate and give/take constructive criticism is not only going to limit artistic growth, it's an Entire Life Destroyer
couldn't agree more
Follow artists in ALL kinds of fields, I think the idea that you can ONLY follow artists making X niche art like you do as marketing has skewed this mindset so hard. Go follow tattoo artists if you do landscapes, follow comic creators as a 3d Modeler, follow abstract if you paint D&D miniatures!!
This is the bad advice my bad brain gives me when I am struggling with imposter syndrome.
