It's a solid film. Maybe a little slow and a little too tame. And while I'm unsure about my personal feelings about the ending it's certainly a bold and unique choice.
Solving the mystery also feels too clean. There's no real dead ends or misread clues. I guess you can count the dirt and garden, but it doesn't feel like a real setback.
And as much fun as I had with the conspiracy theory of Nikki is the Slayer, she doesn't really add much to the film. It feels like she's there to fill a first romance quota. She either needed to be involved more or cut entirely in my opinion.
It also really feels like there's supposed to be a part 2 that will conclude things. But that's not the case as far as I can tell. And digging a bit that unease and unresolved feeling is part of the point for the creative team.
Hmmmm. I do not know how I feel about that ending. Definitely a downer, but the rest of the film was so relatively tame that I don't have that visceral negative reaction I usually do. This feels like less a losing end and more a pyrrhic victory. I think that lessens the sting.

This also let's the climax be much faster paced than the mystery stuff. It's a nice change of pace. Not that i thought the mystery stuff was slow. But I think another abduction scene in the middle would have been a good idea.
Okay the final showdown being a game of manhunt is a nice way do things. Definitely seems way outside Mackey's normal MO but he's stressed and pissed off, and it's good writing. So I will happily buy in.
Hiding in the attic. They did foreshadow that during the conversation at the front door. Seems like a big oversight that the cops didn't sweep the house before letting the family back in. But it's not like cops are known for being good at their jobs.
Okay Mackey is definitely going to attack one of the families for a final showdown, right? Probably Davey's, but there are a few disfunctional ones that would be easier targets. But that's the only thing that makes sense to finish things off now.
