For now I don't want to sink a few hundred Euros into a camera just to try it. I'll have to keep an eye on second hand sites and see if anything decent shows up :)

Second hand or try one of the cheaper Chinese brands; there are a few that would certainly be acceptable (also in lower light conditions) and then if it all works out you could move it to a secondary camera position when you upgrade camera 1 (or 2).
