I think the deaths of the civilians killed in the October 7th attack are worth mourning. The Israeli state did not: it made them into an excuse for the mass killing of thousands and thousands of other civilians. It forged them into a call for death. It soaked their memories in shame and blood.

I think, frankly, that was an evil thing to do. As evil, in its way, as the bullets by Hamas militants that cut them down. A perversion of memory and the dead, to load them up with responsibility for your own bloodlust. All the more so because it came from their own government.
