A good fallback but I think I will go with my proposed "left shoe in the back seat" every time I drive until the habit is so engrained I always look in back seat before leaving car for the rest of my life.

that sounds good, I would always put my work bag/laptop/briefcase/whatever in the back seat as a physical reminder. sadly you can never be too careful
