Chandra, the space-based observatory that brings us incredible x-ray images of the most extreme environments in the cosmos, is at risk of cancellation. It’ll be a huge loss to astronomy if the mission ends prematurely for budget reasons. Go to www.savechandra.org#SaveChandra
I might be missing the point here, but the FY25 CBJ shows chandra receiving $41.1M. This is a 40% reduction, which is troubling for any program, but it doesn't seem like cancelation. Am I missing something?
Wow that’s beautiful
Thank you! What a loss if it can't be saved!
But we got money to give to Intel, Elon, ... oh wait. I forgot we're " capitalists". According to Jim Crow Joe.
I wonder why they cancel it.... Because "budget" is just relative to how much they desire to fund it. I guess we don't need X-ray images anymore? Is it something that James Webb can do better? For all I know is that JW uses infrared only.
I just watched something on the NASA channel showing Chandra images and it was so cool.
Not cancelled because it ran out of power or broke or stopped responding. A working, in situ space telescope cancelled because of govt mismanagement
Could operations be shifted to the broader astronomical community? Like, could volunteers do this work with oversight?
