Saying that scientists or scientific institutions should stay out of politics is saying that they should be indifferent to all the things that affect their continued existence as both a sector of human endeavor and as living human beings. It’s unrealistic and absurd.
If we want to make it to the Sun’s “boil off the oceans” phase, scientists & their institutions better keep ragging on those (largely scientifically unqualified) politicians to listen to them and get their funding. The day the folks driving scientific endeavours are ignored is the day we are doomed.
Over many years I've written a comprehensive list of people that should stay out of politics, which I'm happy to share with you today: 1. Power-hungry billionaires. /list
I'm old enough to remember politics certainly didn't stay out of science under Stephen Harper! Too few Canadians today seem to remember, imo.
From my interaction with him (and his followers) yesterday, he seems to think that science is objective facts. To me, that confuses the product of scientific research with the intellectual and cultural enterprise that creates the infrastructure to produce the research.
This would, of course, also be a lot easier if it were reciprocal, but lately it seems like "scientists should stay out of politics" actually means "scientists should stop announcing results that contradict my policy goals" -- COVID, climate change, plastics and recycling, you name it.
Tom is not smart
If con Christians believed their own book, they would stay out of politics/govt, and rely on God n good works to convince others of their faith. John says Jesus called his followers is out of the world, not get involved in it. Paul tells believers to submit to government, not participate in it.
Funny how no one ever says fishermen should stay out of politics.
the way I see it if science stays out of politics who's gonna tell the business fools to stop filling the sky with so many satellites they block out the night, who's gonna tell them to stop hollowing out the earth and burning it
I think you should speak only in proven facts (the kind that never change). Better yet, speak only in math!
