The far right is doing well in elections not because it is popular, but because it is constructed as the only alternative to a deeply unpopular status quo This is a conscious strategy by mainstream elite to offer a choice between them and worse, thus legitimising the worse
It is often tempting to compare our current situation to the rise of fascism in the early 20th century One key difference is that most have been convinced that the only form of resistance is faith in the sensible liberal mainstream (even as it unashamedly enables the far right)
While reactionaries may use women's rights to attack other minorities (Muslim communities, trans people, immigrants etc), you really don't have to scratch the surface much to realise that they are not attached to said rights, but to the exclusion of others (including women)
