If your environment is very dark, regardless of shadow settings, you have to do what you would in the physical world: put some lighting in your house. This may take a while for everyone to realise/catch in though, so other places may still be dark. Also the Exposure slider is your friend 🙂
But don't try doing that with the viewer running. I tried that and was greeted with BSOD and a reboot.
I'll have to see what the official viewer is like now, Firestorm is still unusable due to locking up. I've noticed that my mic is activated as soon as viewers load, even if voice is disabled.

This is still in Beta, trust me it's better then the Alpha test. Camera and movement controls are definitely still an issue. As for your appearance, file a feedback from the app or on Canny. If they don't know, they can't fix it. Include details though, like the make and model of head & eyes.
For once I agree with the words of the PM “disgraceful act of vandalism”. There's a lot more relevant targets for such protest actions.
