ICYMI: For my monthly book review newsletter, I finally wrote about something I've been privately ranting about for years: the poisonous over-simplification of The Power Broker by people who may or may not have actually read it buttondown.com/Booktime/arc...
Hello everyone, This month’s edition is about the legacy of The Power Broker, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary. I believe its legacy is much more...
One other thing: We verified hundreds of examples of NYC drivers locked out in or near surge zones, when prices are higher ostensibly to attract more drivers. Locked out by Arthur Ashe Stadium during the US Open, Yankees Stadium right after a game, etc. www.bloomberg.com/graphics/202...
To get around minimum wage laws in New York, where drivers must be paid for time on the clock in between rides, Uber and Lyft are simply locking them out of the app so there's no record that they're on the roads. Incredible, infuriating story by @leonyin.orgwww.bloomberg.com/graphics/202...

I am now aware there is a repetition of "locked out" in that post. Oh well, you all know what I mean.
We also built a tool to approximate the financial impact on the lockouts. Uber and Lyft are slated to save potentially hundreds of millions of dollars next year by gaming the system. You can read all about it and play around with the model in the story. www.bloomberg.com/graphics/202...

U/L don't disclose how big the lockouts are. So we built a WhatsApp bot to accept screenshots. We then manually reviewed all 7,000 of them (from 800 drivers) to ensure accuracy, log the time, and mark approximate location of the lockout. We interviewed 120 drivers. www.bloomberg.com/graphics/202...
Uber and Lyft locked drivers in NYC get locked out of the app to stop them from working in order to game the city's minimum wage rule. @natlungfy.bsky.social@leonyin.org@denisedslu.bsky.social, and I reported on the impact this had and what it means for fair wages for drivers.
