Upon kidnapping an Elder as a hostage, a fight broke out amongst the group of evil Namekians and Grunge and his brother were amongst them. A random strike ended up hitting Grunge's brother, killing him. Grunge swore revenge on the group but opted to free the Elder and flee with him.

They both eventually came to Earth where Grunge had a change of heart and wanted to go back to avenge his brother. The Elder decided against it and destroyed the the spaceship. The Elder then taught Grunge to let go of his malice where he was later appointed to be Guardian after the Elder's passing.
