Just finished Endling: Extinction is Forever (2022). Fun survival game with stylish visuals. The simplified gameplay meant that more mental space could be devoted to the changing environment. A suitably sad tale told without a word, and an appropriately ambiguous ending. The cubs were very cute.

The cover for the game, featuring a mother fox leading three cubs across a pipe spanning a polluted river. In the background are a factory and forest.
The fox and her kits sneak in the forest past a scavenger wearing a gas mask and trenchcoat, wielding a long rifle, and carrying a large sack full of objects.
The fox comforts one of her pups on an industrial walkway.
The fox and her kits follow behind a badger. They are on the fenced border of a farm.

Just went to Spirit Halloween.

A display rack featuring merchandise based on the "Hawk Tuah" meme, including hats, T-shirts, jumpers, flags, buttons, lanyards, decals, and beer cookies. In the background are more traditional Halloween costumes.

Just finished Little Nightmares II (2021). Awful controls let the whole game down. The atmosphere was cool and there were a couple spooky parts, but they can't make up for just how difficult lining up a jump is or how often you get caught up on the cluttered environment. The combat was abysmal.

The cover art for the game, featuring a boy with a bag on his head and a girl in a yellow raincoat standing atop a pile of refuse.
The boy with a bag on his head stands on top of a television in the middle of the forest. He is tiny.
The boy two hands a ladle, dragging it across the kitchen floor in a fight with several marionettes.
The boy and a girl cross a thin wooden bridge across a chasm in the middle of the city. The telephone poles and surrounding buildings lean towards the abyss.

Just finished Mass Effect 3 (2012). A somewhat rushed conclusion to a hugely ambitious trilogy that almost nails it. Despite a sometimes rocky story (generally with the ending) the gameplay is deeply enjoyable and a highlight. The legendary edition including all the expansions improves the original.

The box art for the game on PlayStation.

Just finished Doom 3: VR Edition (2021). The first time I've thoroughly enjoyed my time with the game. Flat cutscenes and platforming aside, this feels like the way the game was designed to be played. The small but detailed environments and right angle layouts made it shine in ways that flat cannot.

The cover art for DOOM 3 VR EDITION, featuring a snarling Hell Knight.
The marine protagonist examines his gun from the first person perspective near a medical station. He is holding a machine gun. The ammo counter reads fully loaded, with 60 rounds in the clip and 114 in reserve. His wrist mounted AVD displays 67 health, 0 armor, low flashlight battery, and full stamina. A nearby sign features a drawing of a hand with a finger injury and reads "First Aid station.", and the health terminal has a full 100.
The player aims the marine's plasma rifle at a zombified Z-Sec guard wielding a shotgun. The plasma rifle's display readsa near full 48 rounds in the clip with 296 shots in reserve.
The player examines the marine's BFG at the entrance of the Hell level. The AVD reads full 100 health and full 125 armor, medium remaining flashlight battery, and full sprint (sprint is unlimited in Hell). The BFG's display reads a full 4 in the clip and 24 in reserve.

Just finished The Forgotten City (2021). Very fun mystery game. Makes good use out of its looping mechanic, and I enjoyed the way conversations were useful for progression. Playing as a debate nerd getting over involved in people's affairs never got old. Just enough endings to make replays worth it.

The cover art of the game. A split down the middle divides a gloomy crumbling city with a pained looking golden statue in the present and a pristine city and a man in period appropriate armor. In the middle is a figure cloaked in shadow.
An ornate garden hosting a number of pained looking human statues made of gold.
A conversation with a woman named Equitia, who is wearing an ancient Roman era priestess gown. She says "A new face! Ave, and may Vesta watch over you. I'm Equitia. To what do I owe the pleasure of this visit?" The player's possible responses are listed on the right, and from top to bottom are: "What's your story?" "Do you know a way out of here?" "What do you think about The Golden Rule?" "I'll be going now."
A magical looking sphere in the center of a temple. The golden doors are opened, and at the entrance lie a pile of bones.

Just finished Yakuza: Dead Souls (2011). Fun "what if" game that replaces the street brawling with zombie shooting. The plot is flatter than the prior entries, but the humor and character moments are as strong as ever. This was the first time I felt compelled to engage with the weapon crafting.

The cover of the game, featuring the four gun wielding protagonists as well as a horde of zombies.
Protagonists Akiyama, Kiryu, Ryuji, and Majima line up to pose in the middle of the street with their unique weapons. Respectively, they carry two Beretta 92 FS pistols, an Accuracy International AS50 rifle, a custom made Gatling arm cannon, and a SPAS 12 shotgun.
A horde of bloody zombies stumble through the destroyed streets of Tokyo.
Seen from behind, Akiyama, wearing a red pinstripe suit, faces down a group of zombies indoors.

Just finished Yakuza 4 (2010). Fun game, the main plot had a lighter tone than the previous entry. The multiple protagonists meant that leveling up was significantly faster than before, which helped in getting to the fun, complicated parts of combat faster. Another solid improvement to the series.

Title screen for the game featuring SEGA copyright in the bottom right corner.
The game's four protagonists all stand side by side in a line and look up. Each is wearing a black suit jacket and white dress shirt, but in their own unique style. From the left: Akiyama, Saejima, Kiryu, and Tanimura.
Officer Tanimura flips over an enemy gangster wearing a pinstripe suit.

Just finished Humanity (2023). One of my new favorites. Puzzles were the perfect blend of difficult and satisfying to solve. New mechanics were introduced frequently enough to stay fresh but were never overwhelming. The visuals were easily readable and overwhelmingly gorgeous. A modern masterpiece.

The cover for Humanity. A dog made of bright light looks over crowds of featureless humans walking up ramps and climbing a structure to ascend into a beam of light.
A large box of freestanding water is in the center of the stage. Humans appear from a door near the top and are guided by arrows to either swim through the water or navigate a series of ramps to make it to the bottom and ascend.
Humans leap in several arches across a large gap. A golden figure (A "Goldy") can be spotted near the camera.
Humans are guided by arrows as opponents in grayscale are pushed aside by a large air fan into the void. A separate group of "Others" are pushed via fan into the line of humans.

Just finished Crysis (2007). The Nanosuit can be tricky to learn, but has a high skill ceiling for maximal effectiveness. The rhythm for when to switch modes becomes serving nature. Attacking soldiers like the Predator with hit and run tactics merger gets old. Shame about the game's second half.

The cover art for Crysis, minus text. The suit the character wears is indistinguishable from the characters that appear on high end GPUs.
Protagonist Nomad overlooks a military Outpost on the beach at sunset.
Nomad fires a gun at a vehicle, causing it to crash.
Nomad looks up at several squid like alien foes in an icy tropical forest.
